What the oil film does

Inside an engine, gearbox or bearing, metal parts move against each other under load. A thin film of lubricant keeps them apart. The model shows that film inside a ball bearing.

Separates moving parts
The film keeps metal surfaces from touching, which reduces friction and wear.
Carries heat away
Oil moving through the system takes heat from the hottest contact points.
Keeps parts clean
Engine oils hold dirt and deposits in suspension until the next oil change.
Protects surfaces
A protective layer helps resist rust and corrosion while the machine is standing.

How to read a grade

Every Supreme Lubricant pack shows its SAE viscosity grade and its API service category. This is what they mean.

  1. 20W Winter grade. The lower the number before the W, the more easily the oil flows at a cold start.
  2. 50 Viscosity at operating temperature (100 °C). A higher number means a thicker oil when the engine is hot.
  3. SL API category for petrol (spark-ignition) engines. Categories starting with S are for petrol engines; later letters are newer standards.
  4. CF API category for diesel (compression-ignition) engines. Categories starting with C are for diesel engines.
Example: 20W-50 API SL/CF, as printed on a Supreme Lubricant pack.
